The United States is engaged in a violent war in the Pacific and against Hitler’s Germany. There is no end in sight.

As Trudy Mansfield anticipates being a high school senior, she ponders the question, “What will I be in a year?” Her choices are limited. Circumstance and being a girl restrict her. Will she be stuck working in another dreary defense factory like she did during the summer? Will her dreams for the future slip away? In truth, these dreams are total adolescent fantasies and as implausible as many of the female characters portrayed in corny screwball comic movies. Uphappily, Trudy sees herself ending up like her mother, married (if a man will ever want her) and bored, spending all day tending to house chores and occasionally taking a break to go shopping.

Not being clairvoyant and without a crystal ball, Trudy has no way to know that her life will be very different from what she images. She has already begun a journey that will transport her from a simple neighborhood on the edge of Los Angeles and propel her into an extra-ordinary world. Her future will be as unbelievable – even more unbelievable than anything she ever saw in the movies…
